Is El Nido Safe for Children?
Yes, El Nido is generally safe for kids. Crime is minimal. The main considerations are medical access and infrastructure rather than personal safety. El Nido has a small clinic with basic services, but serious injuries require a 5-6 hour van ride to Puerto Princesa. This is not a place for a child with underlying health conditions or serious allergies without medical contingency planning.
That said, thousands of families travel through El Nido annually with young children. The key is preparation: bring your own medications, travel insurance that covers evacuation, and realistic expectations about pace and flexibility.

Lio Beach — The Winner for Families
Lio Beach is the clear choice. It's 20 minutes from town by van (₱150 per person, or hire a van for ₱1,500/day). Calm water, gentle slope, perfect for toddlers and non-swimmers. There's a small cluster of beachfront restaurants and bars (Art Cafe, Lio Café) with shade. Families can rent loungers, order lunch, and let kids wade safely. The beach doesn't get crowded — you'll see other families but not tour groups. Plan a full day here: arrive 9am, leave at 4pm.
Las Cabanas Beach — Secondary Option
Las Cabanas is shallower than it appears in photos. The south end has a lifeguard station and is calmer than the zipline side. It's 30 minutes north of town. Water clarity is good, but there's less shade and fewer facilities. Best for an afternoon swim if you're already north exploring. Not ideal as a standalone family beach day — it's better as a stop on the way to Nacpan.
Beaches to Skip with Kids
Nacpan Beach, despite being beautiful, has strong currents and few facilities. Small Lagoon is accessed via slippery rocks and requires climbing. Duli Beach is 1+ hours away and remote — not worth the travel with young children.

Island hopping is El Nido's main draw, and yes, you can do it with kids. But choose carefully. Some tours require scrambling, climbing, or long boat rides that test kids' patience and safety.
Tour A — The Best for Kids
Go this one. Tour A visits calm lagoons (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon) with short, easy walks. Snorkeling is in shallow, protected water. Boat ride is under 2 hours total. Kids can handle the pace. Bring your own child-sized life jackets — tour operators often only have adult sizes, and borrowed gear may not fit properly.
Cost: ₱1,400–1,800 per person. Tours depart 8am, return 4pm. Book through your accommodation. Pack extra snacks, sunscreen, and a waterproof bag for phones.
Tour B, C, D — Skip or Postpone
Tour B involves cave entries that require ducking and scrambling. Tour C is longer (6+ hours) with more physical hikes. Tour D is overnight or very long. None are practical with children under 10. If you're staying 5+ days, take Tour A on Day 2 and leave the others for your next Palawan trip as a couple.
Bring your own child life jackets from home. They're lightweight, pack small, and fit properly. It's the single most important safety decision for families island hopping. Don't rely on operators' equipment.
Where to Stay with Kids
Lio Estate Area — Best for Families
Resorts around Lio Beach (Lio Estate development, 20min from town) are the ideal choice. They're quieter than town, family-oriented, and have good restaurants. Options like Miniloc Island Resort or El Nido Resorts' properties often have pools, spacious rooms, and staff accustomed to families. Daily cost: ₱4,000–7,000 for a family of 4 in a good standard room or bungalow.
Town Center — Budget Option, Less Ideal
Cheap guesthouses in town (₱800–1,200 per room) are tempting but loud and cramped. Tricycles rumble past at 6am. Restaurants stay open late. It's fine for couples, but families with young children benefit from quiet space. You'll spend the savings on coffee and restaurant meals to escape the noise.
What to Look For
- Air conditioning or good fan circulation (important for sleep quality)
- Mosquito-proof room (screens or AC keeps them out)
- Pool or beach access (kids need water play)
- Restaurant on-site or very close (you won't want to go out for every meal)
- Staff who are accustomed to families (big difference in helpfulness)
Transport with Toddlers — The Real Challenge
Tricycles are everywhere in El Nido but have no child seats or restraints. If you have a toddler, bring a carrier or ergo backpack and wear them. Don't put them loose on a tricycle bench — it's unsafe on bumpy roads.
For beach days or airport transfers, hire a private van (₱1,500–2,000/day) rather than relying on tricycles. It's more comfortable for the whole family and eliminates transfer stress.
Getting from Airport
